Pista Plus Floor Pump
The Silca Pista pump has been a favorite among cyclist since its launch way back in 1962. Cycling has changed a lot since then but thanks to some forward thinking on Silca's behalf and a readily assessable supply of replacement parts, many of those pumps are still in use. While the original Pista was designed to be easy to take on the go with its compact size, the version that we have here, the Pista Plus Floor Pump, improves upon the original with a larger, three footed aluminum base for more stability while topping off tires at home or in the shop. Other nice details include an enlarged, lathe-turned Ash handle offering excellent ergonomics borrowed from the SuperPista Ultimate platform.
Things that we’re happy about remaining the same include the durable steel barrel, 3mm-thick leather plunger piston design, and proprietary brass air bridge and check-valve assembly. Pumping action is extremely smooth and efficient, thanks to that leather plunger washer and German Igus linear bearings taking the max pressure of the Pista Plus up to 220 PSI if you see yourself taking to the banks of a velodrome anytime soon.
The Pista Plus' long, flexible filler hose easily reaches a bike in the stand, and its integrated Schrader chuck and a push-on alloy Presta chuck with a bleeder valve mean it's always on the ready to pump up some tires. The hose and chuck dock on the side of the barrel, grabbing it by the hose, right by the chuck, meaning you can choose to swap the standard issue chuck out for Silca's HIRO chuck or the Disc Wheel Adapter while retaining the ability to secure the hose to the pump. Its large, easy to read 64mm gauge is mounted down low, out of harm's way if it gets tipped over, and is accurate to within 2%.

Mehh. You have one job. One Job! ;)

Sure its nicely built. Yes, the gauge is fairly accurate. Yes its seems it will last a long time. Those things should be a given for the price. Is it worth the price of admission? Meh... This thing has one job. To pump up a tire. Does it excel at this one job? Not really. To inflate a 29 x 2.35 mtb tire it takes over 40 full, top to bottom pumps. In addition the inflation head is not 90 degrees so fails to pump up 16 in kids mtb tires because the pump head doesn't fit. Sure I can buy the 80 buck accessory that does 90 degrees, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a top of the line pump eh? The pump is also low, and makes me slump over to use which sometimes irritates my back. The gauge isn't really meant for fine adjustments of PSI and I still require a different gauge to adjust pressure accurately. It loves to grab a hold of the presta valve, not let go, then suddenly let loose, often crashing your hand on spokes, discs, and cassettes. Its the only pump I've owned in 25 years of riding that's caused blood to be drawn. Does it pump air? Yeah it does. So does every other pump on the market.

Simple perfection

The base-model Pista is amazing for its simplicity. You can buy replacement parts for all of the consumables here, and the rest of it will just last forever. (Actually my 1980 Pista finally rusted out, so there is a limit.) To me, it says a lot that the replacement pump chuck is indicated to fit Silca pumps made "from 1949 to present." Note that the pump chuck fits on the stem by just jamming a tight rubber gasket over the stem--no levers, threads, or other complexity. It works really well and couldn't be more simple, but to get it off, the best way is to turn the stem to the top of the wheel, grip the tire from both sides with your fingers and use your thumb to push the chuck off the stem. My wife absolutely cannot do this, it turns out that simplicity requires larger hands and some hand strength.
