Waterproof performance and packable protection in the Foray 3L Jacket

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"This is my go-to shell for wet-weather hikes and summer thunderstorms. The full-length side zips are a lifesaver for venting heat, and the fit is versatile enough for layering without feeling bulky."

The Outdoor Research Foray 3L Jacket is built for serious weather protection without weighing us down. Its AscentShell Dry 3-layer membrane teams up with a Nikwax DWR finish to keep heavy rain and wind at bay while maintaining breathability when we’re moving hard. On steep climbs, the TorsoFlo side zips open from hem to bicep to release heat or even convert into poncho mode to shield our pack. Whether we’re heading into alpine storms or packing light for variable conditions, the Foray provides dependable waterproofing, adaptable ventilation, and a clean fit that works from trail to town.

No longer 3L Gore-Tex

I've had several 3L Foray Rain Jackets, and they've all performed perfectly. Always true to size, with a stretchy athletic fit. I was bit bummed to learn that the Foray is being longer constructed with Gore-Tex waterproofing. Still, a solid jacket made by a fantastic manufacturer with an unbeatable "infinite" guarantee.

Great work jacket

The jacket was great for the environment I was working in overseas. I can slide it in a pack and then pull it out during light to heavy rain storms and be completely dry. The hood will accommodate a tac helmet. Great jacket

Does the Job

I wore this in a steady downpour with no seepage whatsoever. So far, so good. Great pit zips to cool down on a warm, rainy day. Solid construction.

Foray = Hooray!!!

The Foray 3L is a great addition to my outdoor gear. The fit is roomy enough for an additional layer underneath but looks good either way. I love the pit zips that extend all the way to waistline. I haven’t tested the Foray 3L in a downpour but it looks and fits great. For those wondering, yes it is a little roomier in the midsection than others I have had in the past.

Superb quality and really comfy

This is a truly hardcore rank jacket, nothing is getting through!

Very functional

Its a little more pink than I was expecting but overall function of the jacket is great-- I need it to repel water and it does just that.

Wets out in 45 minutes

The primary purpose of a jacket like this is to keep you dry in the rain for a reasonable amount of time. The most I got out of it before it started getting wet in shoulder area was 45 minutes. I don't consider that a reasonable amount of time. Some of the features like the way it opens in many different ways for breathability and the feel of the material are nice but irrelevant if it is not waterproof.

Low quality

Really bad quality, all my pocket broken in one year.

Light and Waterproof

Exactly what I was looking for in a shell. Super light and packable plus waterproof! Recently used it on a quick hike to Colchuck Lake with random light sprinkles. It was easy to take off and put on and provided some wind break and took up almost no space or weight in my pack. I'm purchasing another one for my son because it ended up being such a great jacket. Great jacket for the outdoors, can't recommend enough.

Great full-featured shell!

I have been using a Foray as my main hardshell layer for nearly 10 years now. The full-zip sides, three pockets, and other features make this a heavier jacket than other models, but the cost in weight gains you quite a few more features than other jackets.
