What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
“This bag is built for the coldest alpine conditions. The 800-fill RDS-certified down delivers incredible warmth without excess weight, and the GORE-TEX shell keeps moisture out while remaining breathable. The contoured footbox, draft collar, and down-filled face gasket trap heat efficiently, so I stay warm even in extreme temperatures. Whether I’m on a high-altitude expedition or winter camping, this bag is my ultimate protection against the cold.”
When temperatures plunge to extreme lows, we need a sleeping bag that guarantees warmth, protection, and comfort. The Mountain Hardwear Phantom GORE-TEX Sleeping Bag is built for the harshest alpine environments, offering -40°F-rated insulation with 800-fill RDS-certified down. The ultralight yet highly protective GORE-TEX shell repels moisture while remaining breathable, ensuring we stay warm and dry in the most unforgiving conditions.
Designed with high-alpine expeditions in mind, this bag features a contoured footbox for natural positioning, a four-chamber hood for even loft, and a draft collar to prevent heat loss. A two-way zipper allows for ventilation when needed, while the lightweight compression sack makes it easy to pack down for backcountry travel. Whether summiting remote peaks or winter camping in deep snow, the Phantom is the last line of defense against extreme cold.

One of the best mummy bags that money can buy!
I bought this bag for extreme winter camping here in Alaska, and will be using it in all of our winter camping videos on our YouTube channel (Alaskan Nomads). Amazing bag! I first bought the North Face Inferno -40C bag and ended up returning it after how easily the zipper snagged. I’m happy to say that the zipper on this bag barely snags at all. The GoreTex shell is another feature that is really nice, and makes a big difference in keeping the bag dry and retaining full loft. I went with the long version. I’m 6ft 2in tall and 260 lbs, and I have plenty of room to move around and even roll over in the bag when fully zipped up. Believe it or not, in don’t feel claustrophobic in this bag, which says a lot because I traditionally don’t enjoy mummy bags. This is by far the nicest, warmest, and most comfortable bag I have ever owned and I’m extremely happy that I bought it.

My Go-To Sleeping Bag for High-Altitude Expeditions
My go-to sleeping bag on my recent 8000m expedition to Kangchenjunga. I’m 6'2", 185 lbs, and the long size fit me perfectly with plenty of room to move around. The bag is exceptionally durable and incredibly warm with its 800 fill goose down. The real game changer was the GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER shell. With condensation inside the tent and occasional water drips, the bag stayed completely dry. Despite its warmth, it compresses down well, making it easy to pack for higher camps. This is without a doubt one of the best expedition sleeping bags available.
