What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"I’ve worn the Moab Speed 2 Mid GTX Wide through miles of rain, mud, and slick rock, and it’s never let me down. The wide fit gives my forefoot space to move, the GORE-TEX keeps me bone dry, and that Vibram® outsole? Grips like glue."
When we’re heading into unpredictable conditions or long-haul terrain, the Moab Speed 2 Mid GTX Wide Hiking Shoe checks every box. Its GORE-TEX waterproof membrane gives us confidence in wet, muddy, and high-humidity environments, while the wide fit eliminates the pressure points that can ruin a hike. Whether we're tackling alpine climbs or moving fast through a storm, this shoe keeps us comfortable, supported, and dry.
Built from rugged nylon ripstop with TPU overlays, it’s made to handle abrasion while staying breathable. The FloatPro™ midsole offers lightweight cushioning, while FlexPlate™ tech enhances control and torsional stability on sketchy scrambles. A Vibram® TC5+ outsole with aggressive, multi-directional lugs provides grip you can count on no matter the forecast.

Here's what customers have to say
The hiking boots have a mix of positive and negative feedback. Many customers praise the comfort, fit, and performance, especially for hiking and backpacking. Features like lightweight construction, waterproofing, and excellent grip are highlighted. However, some customers report issues with durability and longevity, with the soles and materials wearing down quickly. There are also concerns about insufficient support and protection for more strenuous hikes on rough terrain. Overall, the boots seem suitable for lighter hiking and everyday wear, but may not be the best choice for serious backcountry adventures or extended use.

Very good
Very comfortable, supportive and protective from rocky surfaces. One negative is that if and when they get wet inside (I was setting a tent up in the pouring rain for about one hour), they develop quite an odour. But, most footwear would likely do the same. Overall, I feel they are a good hiking shoe. I've never been disappointed with Merrell shoes/boots.

Satisfied feet
I had my fist pair of Merrell shoes similar to to the Speed 2. The first time I put them on, about 12 years ago they fit right out of the box. I knew then that I found my shoe. I just had to throw them away and it was like losing an old friend. I have bought a number of Merrells since and each time they fit right out of the box. The Speed 2 I just got shows me that while perfection is unattainable, Merrell keeps trying to get there.

Perfect boot for backpacking
Merrell Moabs have been my go-to boot for backpacking for more that 15 years. I bought these and my first trek was in the Backcountry of Glacier National Park. This boot is definitely a step up from my other Moabs. They seemed to hike cooler while maintaining protection from water. Like my other Moabs, these were comfortable right out of the box. The greatest benefit of my break-in period was softening the ankle support, which starts out pretty stiff. They were perfect for backpacking on trails with lots of elevation gain and loss. Lots of miles and ups and downs, but no blisters or hotspots on my feet... Merrell's website alerted me when I ordered to step down a half size because these boots run larger than their other Moab lines. That was absolutely correct. A half size down was a perfect fit.

I Like Them
As I've aged, I have struggled w/ toe pain due to inadequate toe box space in most shoes/boots. I'm an avid hiker and cyclist, so the feet get put to the test. These boots have been very good having moved from 11.5D to 12W in sz. I feel they're a little sloppy in the heel, but forefoot comfort is great. Hiked 9 mi @ Indiana Dunes State Park on Sunday. All good!

My best hiking shoe
Very soft and light weight shoe! Grip is fantastic! Please note - I feel wide shoe is little large.

They do not hold well to actual hiking.
They fall apart if you actually hike. Their water resistance doesn’t last long and requires constant spraying to keep them that way. The outer soul is a thin layer glued to the mid soul that separates easily, as well as the toe portion. So if you plan on going miles of hiking, hard paths, rocky areas, hiking in the rain… these are not the ones.

Upgraded for and Old Dude
As described. Long time Merrell customer. Had a pair of hikers for 15 years plus. These are lighter, more comfortable, and breathable. Love them so far.

overall a good shoe
I bought these less that a year ago, but no exact record, love the shoe overall, and especially the sole, does not pick up and hold rocks like some other soles. fit is good but the thin fabric at the toe does not hold up, I have developed a hole in both toes at the bend point. Needs a stronger fabric or reinforcing.
