Fantastic Shovel.

You get what you'd expect from Mammut avalance rescue gear. Quality construction with thoughful features. Shovel handle is ergonomic, shaft extension is approperiate, moves a large volume of snow, and the hoe function is intuitive to use. Packability is great while still providing a large shovel blade. I used a BCA B1-Ext for a couple years, and this was a significant upgrade. Very happy with my purchase.

I never thought a Hoe would be so beneficial

It's a great shovel that turns into a hoe to assist in pulling snow from around the victim. I shopped quite a few shovels without the hoe feature and kept returning to the Alugator Pro. Thankfully, I have not had to use this dual-purpose tool in an emergency, but living at 8,000 feet in the mountains of Utah, I have had the opportunity to use the Alugator Pro more than a few times, and I am glad I made this purchase.

Light and capable, but long handle

This is pretty close to a perfect avalanche shovel. It's light but sturdy, has a full grip, and supports either normal shovel mode or hoe mode (which guides agree lets you move a lot more snow quickly). The blade size is good and the build quality seems solid. There are a couple minor issues: (1) I wish Mammut had added a little stopper rivet to prevent accidentally overshooting the little clip that holds the handle in place, in either mode. It's easy to accidentally push the handle too far through, especially when you're moving fast in crisis mode. (2) The handle is quite long, even when fully collapsed and separated from the blade. It just barely fits into my BD Dawn Patrol 32 avalanche pocket, and requires some careful positioning of the other components to fit at all. I haven't found the same thing to be true of a couple other avalanche shovels.

Great light weight shovel/hoe

While I have not used this shovel/hoe in an actual rescue, I have enjoyed using it while practicing rescues. It is light weight. The tabs that keep it in shovel or hoe mode allow the user to simply shove the handle into the correct position without needing to push the tabs in, or ensure it aligns properly (it will stop and click into place). The cutting edge of the shovel/hoe cuts through hard snowpack with ease. It fits really nicely in my backpack, better than my older shovel. Also, there are instructions on how to care for the product, and lifespan info (metal is unlimited, plastic parts are 10yrs (I'm not sure if you can order replacement plastic parts)), on the packaging so check that out as well.

Avalanche shovel

Relatively light for its size and has the option of attaching the blade in “hoe mode” which is far more efficient and faster at moving snow.

Solid

I keep this in my car during the winter just in case I need to move some snow around, have not used yet. Well made (typical for Mammut gear), nice size, no complaints.

Great shovel/hoe

The Mammut, Alugator Pro Light Hoe is a well-built snow shovel/hoe. This will be my second winter season using it. I'm a lift mechanic in Alaska, I used my shovel every day during the winter. Its light, and fits in my pack nice. I've pried harder with it than I ever should have, and it hasn't shown any signs of fatigue. If/when this one kicks the bucket, I'll be buying the same thing again.
